Linn-Benton Community College Upgrades to LED Lighting

Frequent light fixture and socket burn-outs are challenging enough on their own. But when light poles are 20-feet in the air and require a lift for change-outs, it’s not just challenging, it’s also costly and time-consuming. It didn’t take long for this simple exterior lighting upgrade to transform into a campus-wide LED lighting initiative.

Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Oregon is a fully-accredited institution dedicated to quality education and a safe learning environment. More than 22,000 students take at least one class at Linn-Benton Community College each year, with more than 7,000 attending full time.

Lighting maintenance at Linn-Benton Community College was becoming unmanageable. Between the dated exterior CFL fixtures and sockets burning out and the routine maintenance of interior lighting, the school was ready to make a change.

Graybar performed an energy assessment of the campus and proposed a number of lighting solutions to help the college cut energy costs while saving both time and money. By utilizing the U.S. Communities Government Purchasing Cooperative, Graybar helped Linn-Benton Community College secure optimal, prices and utility incentives.

First, Graybar proposed replacing the 116 existing 400W metal halide exterior pole mounted fixtures with Acuity Brands 141W KAD style-fixtures with integrated occupancy sensors set to dim to 30% when no one is in the area.

To help cut costs even more, Graybar proposed replacing the 289 4-lamp 32W CFL interior fixtures in the breezeway with 220 50W Acuity Brands Lithonia Lighting PGX LEDs with integrated occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting technology.

Graybar has done a great job with this project. We are extremely happy with the outcome.

Pleased with the results of these initial lighting upgrades, Linn-Benton Community College decided to move forward with the rest of the main campus, including hallways, stairwells and offices. The new interior lighting for the main campus consisted of Acuity Brands’ BLT Series 2x2, 2x4 and 1x4 Retrofit Door Kits BLT series and incorporated Lutron’s Vive System for centralized wireless lighting control with any smart device.

Linn-Benton Community College also ended up upgrading the exterior lighting for two other Linn-Benton campuses – Benton Center and Lebanon Center.

Linn-Benton Community College benefitted from $184,950 of available incentives from the Energy Trust of Oregon and expects to achieve an annual energy savings of approximately $60,895, and an annual maintenance savings of approximately $40,514.

Plus, thanks to the new, long-lasting LEDs, the maintenance crew has more time to focus on other improvements.
