Graybar Lighting Retrofit Easy on the Eyes

Optometrist Lighting Retrofit

Opportunity

When Kristian Reyes, Graybar Manager, Specialty Business, visited his optometrist in Lafayette, Calif., he didn’t need glasses to see that lighting improvements could make a difference on the sales floor and in the examination rooms. The sales floor, where customers browsed different styles of eyeglass frames and sunglasses, lacked the aesthetic appeal that correct lighting and new fixtures could provide. Furthermore, the examination rooms contained inefficient fixtures and little lighting control. When Kristian informed his optometrist, Dr. Bob DiMartino, of the improvements Graybar could make to his practice, Dr. DiMartino was eager to get the lighting retrofit started.

“We now have general and accent lighting that meets our needs, and we have the satisfaction of knowing that our lighting energy power consumption has dropped to about 20% of what it was with the old lighting. There has also been cost savings from reduced HVAC costs. Finally, our patients appreciate that we’re doing what we can to reduce our carbon footprint.” Dr. Bob DiMartino

Solution

Kristian returned to the office with a Graybar sales representative to analyze the current system. Dr. DiMartino ultimately discussed various options with Dr. DiMartino, and learned his goals for the practice. Keeping Dr. DiMartino’s goals in mind, Kristian and the sales rep designed a plan that included replacements for inefficient fixtures, specified fixtures to offer more quality lighting and better control in the patient rooms, all while reducing the office’s energy usage. They replaced the existing 150W incandescent downlights with 9.5W LEDs, the four-lamp fluorescent troffers that used 111 watts with 50 Watt CR24 LED troffers and NORA NRS92-P42/35BN architectural pendants for aesthetic appeal, and replaced the 50 watt MR16s with dimmable seven watt GE LED par lamps for the glasses display cases. The 26 watt CFLs in the hallway were replaced with the 9.5 W LEDs giving better and warmer light without the same sculpted pattern from the CFLs. The project took about three weeks from start to finish, and Dr. DiMartino participated in the decision-making and design processes.

“We completed this retrofit knowing that not only will his energy usage be significantly reduced, but also that the improvements could create a more pleasant experience for his patients,” said Kristian.

Results

In addition to a properly lit, more inviting workspace, the lighting retrofit that Graybar proposed produced a 93% wattage reduction and better dimming controls in the examination room. By replacing the fluorescent troffers with LED fixtures and adding low-wattage architectural pendant lights, the wattage was approximately cut in half while increasing visual appeal of the doctor’s products. Graybar also designed an 86% wattage reduction in display case lighting while adding improved light distribution, color temperature, and color rendering, which will make the products look better – and, hopefully, sell faster.

“We are so pleased with the result. Our dispensary lost its ‘big box store’ appearance of the fluorescent troffers and now has the boutique look and feel that we were looking for,” said Dr. DiMartino. “Instead of washing out all the detail of our dispensary, we now have general and accent lighting that meets our needs, and we have the satisfaction of knowing that our lighting energy power consumption has dropped to about 20% of what it was with the older lighting. There has also been cost savings from reduced HVAC costs because the new lights produce less heat. Finally, our patients appreciate that we’re doing what we can to reduce our carbon footprint.”
