Graybar Brings Light to High-Performance Automotive Center

Graybar Brings Light Automotive Center Case Study

Opportunity

When Highlands, North Carolina, native and electrical contractor Dennis “Doc” Wilson wanted to pursue his dream of owning and building a high-performance automotive garage and upgrade facility, he knew he would need stateof- the-art lighting to illuminate his new state-of-the-art facility. In late 2013, Wilson contacted Graybar Branch Manager Gary McCall, who quickly enlisted the help of Lighting Business Development Manager Scott Lackey. Graybar is a leading distributor of high-quality electrical, communications and data networking products, and provider of related supply chain management services.

Solution

The building layout and design was created by Schmitt Architectural Design Studio, PLLC Architect Paul Schmitt. Lackey collaborated with Bodwell Associates Lead Designer, Harvey Henry, to design the lighting needs for all areas of the high-tech facility. From site visits and product recommendations to helping identify design challenges and required lighting levels, Henry and Lackey worked closely with Schmitt to ensure that the lighting system would meet the performance required and LED standards Wilson wanted.

After discussing samples and multiple lighting and controls designs, Wilson selected a combination of lights from Eaton’s Cooper Lighting business for the new automotive facility. The LEDs would provide energy-efficiency while highlighting the sleek, stainless steel features of the new facility.

We wanted to deliver a design that truly met the expectations of the customer. Wilson wanted a lighting system as hightech and unique as his new facility, and we delivered.

The installation began in spring 2014, and includes Cooper HB LED high bays for the garage, Accord LEDs for the dyno room, Crosstour LEDs for the outdoor wallpaks and SkyRidge LEDs for the engine room and the first and second floor offices and open areas. The LED lights are expected to provide years of maintenance-free performance as well as aggressive energy savings for the customer.

Results

Passion Performance Auto opened its doors in the summer of 2014 and represents the first high-tech automotive facility in the area. Not only does the facility sell and install automotive high-performance upgrades, but it also builds and tests high-performance engines. Additionally, Passion Performance offers car enthusiasts an opportunity to read their car’s horsepower and performance characteristics with a state-of-the-art all-wheel drive chassis dynamometer.

“Graybar was most helpful and accommodating throughout the whole process. If anything came up, McCall and Lackey were only a phone call away,” said Wilson. “When suddenly the project called for a small LED downlight, they were quick to track down a custom tailored solution to meet the project’s needs.”

The LED light source produces more lumens per watt. This requires a lower wattage lamp/fixture to produce the same light output, which results in lower energy consumption. Graybar provides LED solutions from many manufacturers who have proven to be reliable and meet customer expectations. Get more information on the benefits of LED systems.
