A Lighting Story

A Lighting Story

Don't you just love a good story? I heard a good story the other day, and wanted to pass it along to you.

It reminds me of the time we replaced half of the windows in our home. A couple of months after our window replacement, the gas company came to replace our gas meter. Coincidence? I think not. Because when we replaced the other half of the windows in our home the gas utility returned to replace the meter again!

David Taylor, counter sales manager at Graybar in Youngstown, OH, visited St. Louis recently and told us about one of his customers, Sleepy Hollow Sleep Shop. They replaced all of the 50W PAR HIR lamps in their retail stores with GE LED lamps. This replacement cut their lighting electrical consumption by 80% per lamp, and apparently it also raised some eyebrows of their electric utility company!

After the lighting upgrade, Sleepy Hollow Sleep Shop got a visit from the utility to make sure the meter was functioning properly.

Happy Ending

  • The power company is happy because that means less power to generate, lower peak loads, a more efficient plant and longer before building another power generation facility becomes necessary.
  • The retail shop owner is happy because their bills are significantly lower and the store is actually brighter.
  • The maintenance personnel are happy because these lamps will last five times longer than the PAR HIR lamps they replaced.
