Save Money with Lighting Control and Fixture Rebates

Rebates and incentives targeting energy-efficient lighting are on a strong upward trend. According to the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE), utilities and energy efficiency organizations spent $6.8 billion in 2011, a 26 percent increase over 2010 and a 55 percent increase over 2009. These rebates and incentives now cover about 80 percent of the United States.

Lighting Controls

Lighting controls are increasing in prominence. While the rebate amount per control has remained relatively constant since 2009, availability of rebate programs has expanded dramatically.

According to BriteSwitch, LLC, the number of rebates covering occupancy/vacancy sensors, photosensors, daylight harvesting dimming systems and automatic time-based controls has tripled since 2009. Today, rebates and incentives covering lighting controls are available in 47 of the 50 states.

Average rebates for popular lighting control equipment types are shown below. The most popular control rebate is occupancy sensors, which includes wall-box-mounted, remote-mounted and luminaire-mounted products. The average rebate for a wall-switch-mounted sensor, for example, is $16 in new construction and $23 in existing building retrofit.

Average lighting control rebates:

  • Remote Mounted Occupancy Sensors – Retrofit $34 / New Construction $26
  • Wall-box Occupancy Sensors – Retrofit $23 / New Construction $16
  • Photocells – Retrofit $23 / New Construction $21
  • Fixture Mounted Occupancy Sensors – Retrofit $20 / New Construction $28
  • Daylight Dimming Systems – Retrofit $46 / New Construction $41

In addition to lighting controls, rebates are available for fixtures as well. As reported previously in iNews, utility companies across the country are offering incentives for luminaire replacements. Examples of fixture incentives are:

  • High Bay Fluorescents – $23 – 74/fixture
  • Low Bay High Efficiency Fluorescents – $3 – $31/fixture
  • Fluorescent Retrofits – $4 – 14/fixture
  • LED Exit Signs – $10
  • Lighting Control – $25/sensor
  • Custom Lighting – $0.05/kWh in use reduction
