Ranked as the “fifth most desirable destination to visit in 2012” by The New York Times, the city of Oakland, California, is home to nearly 400,000 residents and is the travel destination of more than 2.5 million visitors a year.

In the past several years, Oakland has been recognized as a top 10 green and sustainable U.S. city eight times, including its recent rank of fourth among large U.S. cities by both the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Mother Nature Network. With such a strong legacy of environmental leadership, it was no surprise when Oakland decided to upgrade its more than 30,000 street lights to a more energy efficient and cost-effective lighting solution.

Solution

Graybar, a leading distributor of high-quality electrical, communications and data networking products and provider of related supply chain management services, collaborated with the team from GE Lighting to offer an LED street lighting fixture. City officials wanted the new street lighting fixtures to meet the exact light output requirements of the existing 70- to 400-watt high pressure sodium fixtures, while consuming less energy.

“We collaborated across teams to come up with a solution that was easy to adapt and met the needs of Oakland,” said Pete Porte, roadway regional sales manager for GE Lighting.

“These lights burn less energy, which means we’re reducing our energy bills and our energy use at the same time, and their much longer lifespan also means we’re reducing our e-waste footprint. Everyone who has contributed to this project is helping Oaklanders and making our city proud.” Mayor Jean Quan

After comparing numerous fixtures, it was determined that the GE Evolve™ LED Roadway Scalable Cobrahead fixtures would be the best solution to meet Oakland’s requirements. The new fixtures will help to reduce glare and improve light controls, all while conserving electricity and enhancing the public spaces throughout the city.

“We took a number of factors into consideration, including the existing high-pressure sodium fixtures, pole spacing, mounting height and street width,” said Kristian Reyes, Graybar Manager, lighting business. “The scalability and flexibility of the Evolve fixtures allowed us to provide a solution tailored to Oakland’s needs.”

Results

The city of Oakland anticipates energy savings in excess of 40 percent and reduced maintenance costs due to the longer life of the LED lighting fixtures.

In addition to the energy cost savings the LED street lighting fixtures will provide, the city of Oakland is utilizing rebates offered by California utility, Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

Thanks to Graybar, Oakland is also benefitting from controls-ready dimmable LED drivers and a special photocell receptacle, which will allow the city to add a full controls and monitoring system without having to open the fixture. The controls will provide the city with the ability to dim the lights during non-peak hours, resulting in additional savings and energy efficiency.

The lighting replacement is expected to save the city more than $1.4 million in annual energy and maintenance costs.
